Family Planning/Contraception

Full range available from the GPs and Nurses during usual surgery hours. Emergency contraception advice often requires urgent same day appointment with doctor or nurse, although it is now available in some pharmacies.

Unwanted Pregnancy

Self-referral to Lothian Abortion Referral Service by calling 0131 536 2454, 9am – 3pm Mondays to Fridays to arrange an appointment. 
Alternatively make an emergency appointment with your GP or at the Sexual Health Clinic.

Self refer for maternity services on 0131 536 2009 

Minor Surgery

The doctors and nurses perform some minor operations, including cautery and freezing of warts and verrucae. Please see the GP first to discuss this. 

Podiatrist

This is now based at Penicuik Health Centre and you can self-refer. Ask at reception for more details.

Physiotherapy

Every GP practice in Midlothian has an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner attached to the practice who you can speak to if you have a muscle, bone or joint problem.  They are all highly experienced and can assess and diagnose any musculoskeletal conditions, provide you with an explanation of your condition, appropriate exercises and discuss management options.  This may include referral to your local Physiotherapy department for ongoing physiotherapy,  pain management advice, X-ray or referral for a specialist opinion.

They can help with: 

  • Muscle, bone or joint pain
  • Back pain / Sciatica
  • Neck pain / Whiplash
  • Joint pain & stiffness including knee/ shoulder, wrist and hand pain and osteoarthritis
  • Muscle or tendon pain e.g. tennis elbow, Achilles tendon pain
  • Sprains or strains e.g. knee / ankle sprain, calf strain
  • Weakness / de-conditioning after injury or surgery
  • Loss of confidence with movement and physical activity.

Travel Vaccinations

GP Practices in Scotland no longer provide this service.  If patients wish travel vaccinations or advice they should contact the Western General Hospital Travel Clinic on 0131 537 2823.

Non-NHS Services

Special examinations e.g. for fitness to undertake sports, HGV/PSV, pre–employment or elderly drivers can be arranged as a special appointment.

A fee will be charged for non–NHS forms (e.g. passport applications and some vaccination certificates).These British Medical Association recommended charges are posted at reception.
